So it should be said that this game isn't based on one particular system, it IS at least a D20 system. The GM probably threw a whole bunch of character creation options together, and that rarely bodes well.

If you want a good system that's similar to this idea, (and you're no stranger to tabletop gaming, as this system is kinda advanced) try D20 Threshold.

Otherwise, play Pathfinder. It's better than D&D 3.5 and doesn't require you sell your soul and sense of decency to an MMO as 4th edition does.
